We got to a working prototype, where the best possible strategy proved to be glorious and brainless button mashing. Two- we couldn’t really come up with cell propagation rules that would have enabled such a fun gameplay experience. That means finding a balance between making sure that the propagation of cells on the screen happens quickly, and giving players the time to actually come up with viable cell formations. One- we wanted the game to be both fast-paced and engaging players’ strategic thinking. There were two related problems we couldn’t really overcome. We had in mind a local multiplayer game, where players would be able to create cell formations whose life cycle would follow rules similar to that of Conway’s game of life, with the twist of being able to conquer (and to be conquered by) enemy cell formations.
